Marimekko and Apartamento Co-Create Bar Unikko during Milan Design Week 2024

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Marimekko’s most iconic print design Unikko, the Finnish lifestyle design brand presents a conceptual takeover of a Milanese café together with Apartamento.

Bar Unikko continues a series of Unikko-inspired events taking place around the world during 2024. Bar Unikko is open from April 15th until April 21st at Via Stoppani 15, Milano.

While Marimekko is globally renowned for its art of printmaking and timeless and functional designs, founder Armi Ratia once famously stated that Marimekko could have equally taken the form of an ice cream parlor, a flower shop or even modern jazz, as long as it would bring joy to people’s everyday lives. Bar Unikko, a week-long pop-up space in Milan, brings this philosophy into fruition.

“Marimekko has always been a philosophy for living and a way of life above all else. As part of our year-long series of Unikko 60th anniversary celebrations, we invited Apartamento to co-conceptualize the spirit of our iconic Unikko print into something entirely new," says Rebekka Bay, Creative Director at Marimekko. "With Bar Unikko, we present a café, a brand experience and a hangout destination all at once. To me, this embodies the spirit of Unikko perfectly.”

Apartamento is widely recognized as today’s most influential, inspiring, and honest interiors publication. Published biannually from its headquarters in Barcelona, Apartamento launched in 2008, followed by its publishing branch in 2015 as a natural extension of the stories and ideas that have grown out of the magazine. Apartamento titles have become an indispensable resource for individuals who are passionate about the way they live.

“Since we began, we have looked at Marimekko's design legacy as an incredible source of inspiration, featuring some of their design legends in our magazine’s pages. It is such an incredible opportunity to be asked to celebrate Maija Isola’s iconic pattern, Unikko, with such a full-scale project during Milan Design Week” says Marco Velardi, Co-founder of Apartamento.

A Limited Edition of Collectible Mugs, Espresso Cups and Trays Celebrate the Anniversary

Marimekko celebrates the 60th anniversary of Unikko with collectible items that are launched throughout the year. Bar Unikko unveils limited-edition espresso cups, mix and match coffee mugs and wooden trays in three different Unikko scales, ranging from a repetitive miniature Unikko to a magnified abstract expression of the hero print. The Unikko 60th anniversary products come in three delicious colorways, which designer Maija Isola first introduced in the 1960’s when she designed Unikko: sunset orange, cobalt blue and the classic red.
